Hello and welcome to the Governors’ page of the Rachel Madocks School website.

The Role of a Governor

The role of the governing body is both interesting and rewarding.  Governors have three main roles

  • To support and challenge the work of the school.  To be critical friend and ask questions about what the school does and the benefits to the students.
  • To think and act strategically by looking at the big picture and not at the day-to-day running of the school
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school, by ensuring we are representing good value for money for the students of the school and the spending of public money.

As a governing body, we are a diverse group of people from all walks of life, all volunteers, who bring a variety of different experiences and expertise to the school.

To help with the workload governors are divided up into two committees:

“Curriculum Committee” and “Resources Committee”.  Each committee meets once every half term.  Each half term we have a Full Governing Body Meeting.  This is where all governors meet together to discuss and support the strategic management of the school. The minutes of these meetings are available on request from the school office.

Contacting Governors

Governors can help with issues that affect the whole school, such as policies.  If you have any questions about one of the school’s policies, or feel that some changes are needed, you are welcome to raise this with a Governor. All communication and correspondence is treated with confidentially. Governors often attend parent’s evenings and school events, in addition to seeing us around school when attending meetings.  Governors can be contacted in writing via the school office or by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. Vacancies:

We currently have vacancies for two co-opted governors and a parent governor.  In looking to fill these vacancies the governors of the school have identified the following skills, experience and attributes that they feel would help strengthen the governing body:

  • time
  • Commitment and interest in our children’s future and improving educational outcomes
  • Inquisitiveness to read paperwork, analyse and question
  • The ability to assimilate information, make judgements and take decisions
  • Good inter-personal skills and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Experience of areas such as education, finance, personnel and business

Co-opted Governors are appointed by the Governing Body, Parent Governors are elected by parents.  All potential governors are invited to visit the school and meet with the Headteacher and Governors.  They may also be invited to attend a meeting.  All potential Governors are required to complete an application form and references will be called for co-opted governors.  Any appointed or elected governors will undergo an enhanced DBS check.
